Harlem Heritage Day Trips:
D #1 Harlem Renaissance Day
Trip
 |
The Harlem Renaissance Day Trip focuses on the glorious period
of the 1920’s when Harlem was a hot bed of artistic expression.
Many educational institutions study the Harlem Renaissance as a part
of their educational curriculums – come to Harlem and visit the
actual sights associated with icons such as Langston Hughes, Duke
Ellington, Zora Neale Hurston, Aaron Douglass and many others.
Tour will also pay special attention to the current economic
renaissance taking place in the community.
|
Group will begin the day at the
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Arturo
Schomburg (the detective of Black history) was born in 1874 in a
Puerto Rican community called Santurce. The story goes that
when Schomburg was in the fifth grade a teacher asserted that
individuals of color had no history, no hero’s and no notable
accomplishments. Young Schomburg, begin to collect all types
of items that would prove that people of color had made a tremendous
contribution to world history. During the 1920’s his
collection was embraced and studied by many Harlem Renaissance
figures.
After visit to the Schomburg, group will
commence a walking/bus tour that will take you to actual Harlem
Renaissance sights such as the Dark Tower (Madam CJ Walker), Pods &
Jerry’s (speakeasy where Billie Holiday got her start), home of
Langston Hughes, Sugar Hill, home of Duke Ellington, Smalls
Paradise, the Apollo Theater, Savoy Ballroom, home of Wallace
Thurman and much more.
Group will dine on a delicious soul food
meal at one of the communities fine restaurants. Eat fried chicken,
fish, candied yams and other dishes while listening to Harlem
Renaissance tunes by the likes of Lena Horne, Alberta Hunter, Roland
Hayes and Duke Ellington.
We will end the day at one of Harlem's
many historic venues experiencing a behind the scenes tour that will
be conducted by someone very familiar with the venue. This
part of the day will compliment the overall theme of celebrating the
Harlem renaissance period.
D #2 "Harlem Civil Rights Day Trip"
Come
with us and spend a day in the Black Mecca of the world and
explore the contributions that 1960's Harlem made to the Civil
Rights Movement. It was less than fifty years ago that
practically every young person in Harlem was connected in some
way with the upward mobility of the community - lets tour the
historic streets and remember those monumental days.
We will begin the tour at the faith based
house of worship where Malcolm X served as minister during
during parts of the 1950's and 1960's. Visit Malcolm's
old office and experience a Multimedia presentation that will
express the impact that this building and it's membership had
on Harlem and America during the Civil Rights Movement.
After the visit to mosque, group will enjoy delicious
soul food at one of several Harlem eateries. We will
treat you to the type of eating atmosphere that would been
applicable during the Civil Rights period.
End the day with a walking/bus
tour that will take you to the actually sights where history
happened. Sights include, but are limited to the
African Nationalist Pioneer Movement,
Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State
Office Building, Canaan Baptist Church and many others.
Many rightfully know of the Martin L. King and Malcolm X, but
in addition we will sing the song of others who who made huge
sacrifices such as Wyatt Tee Walker and Carlos A Cooks.
D #3 Harlem Multicultural Day Trip
 |
Harlem consists of a diverse range of
Black and Hispanic ethnic groups from all over the world. The
Multicultural Day Trip gives visitors the opportunity to enter and
learn about several ethnic enclaves that make the community special.
This experience is ideal for groups and institutions looking to
celebrate cultural diversity. The following is a description
of the day’s events: |
Day starts with a walking/bus tour that
travels through the streets of East (Spanish) and West (Black)
Harlem. There will be two guides available, one from each
section of the community. East Harlem is one of the cities
best kept cultural secrets – group will travel through this section
and see the former residences of Tito Puente and the late great
congressman Vito Marcantonio + more. It seems that every block
in West Harlem has a story to tell – visit the street where Marcus
Garvey lived with his wife Amy + more. Group will enjoy
a delicious soul food meal at a Harlem soul food eatery. Your
stomach will dance to the tunes of fried chicken, ribs, macaroni &
cheese, collard greens, potato Salad + more.
Experience a live salsa music
presentation in Spanish Harlem. Salsa is an American musical
genre, developed in El Barrio (section of Spanish Harlem) and
influenced heavily by the West Harlem Jazz scene. Group will enter a
community garden (usually abandoned city owned property) that’s
fixed up nicely and converted into a social club by community
residents – it’s like a little piece of Puerto Rico in the
neighborhood. Renowned Salsa musicians will entertain and
answer questions inside of the garden – this is truly a one of a
kind experience.
