Harlem Week is an annual month long festival that occurs during the month of August and showcases the best of Harlem's heritage -past present and future. The event began in 1974 as HARLEM DAY and has since blossomed into one of New York Cities best attended cultural celebrations, attracting in excess of one million enthusiasts. Harlem Heritage Tours is honored to work with HARLEM WEEK and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce in showcasing Harlem's glorious history and bright future.

Come uptown during HARLEM WEEK and enjoy an assortment of events such as, "A Great Day in Harlem", "Concert Under the Stars", "Uptown Saturday Night", "Family Unity Day", "National Black College Fair & Expo", "Harlem Day" + more.

The following is a list of cultural sightseeing tours and events that will be offered by Harlem Heritage Tours in conjunction with HARLEM WEEK.


The Official Harlem Jazz and Music Festival Multimedia Bus Tour"

This tour walks visitors through the 32nd year history of HARLEM WEEK and the great contribution that the festival and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce have made to the community. Visit sights associated with the event and its founders such as Strivers Row / Strivers Gardens, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Black Walk of Fame, the Abyssinian Baptist Church and many others.

Meet:      New York City Visitor and Information Center - 810 Seventh Avenue, between 52nd & 53rd Streets across the street from the Sheraton towers.  Guide with red hat will be waiting in front motor of coach with a sign that reads "Harlem Heritage Tours".

"The Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Multimedia Bus Tour"

For over four decades Adam Clayton Powell Jr. served as one of America's greatest religious and political leaders, championing the rights of disadvantaged people worldwide.  Ride and walk through Harlem as we use multimedia effects such as video and audio clips to celebrate the many accomplishments of Adam and his contemporaries.  See video of Adam conducting a Congressional Hearing on a Harlem Street, hear his voice and experience his grand manner within the district that he served so well.  Learn the history of many of Adam's contemporaries such as Jesse Gray, Raymond Jones, Malcolm X, Lloyd Dickens, Vito Marcantonio, Queen Mother Moore, A. Phillip Randolph and many others.

The Harlem Heritage Basketball / Hip Hop Multimedia Tour

Hip Hop Culture and basketball go hand and hand, therefore we present "The Harlem Heritage Hip Hop / Basketball Tour." The idea of this experience is take visitors to sights in Harlem and the Bronx that gave birth to Hip Hop Culture and some of the communities best known basketball players and convey the history and relationship between the two.

The day starts with a multimedia walking / bus tour through the streets of Harlem and the Bronx with stops at sights such as Rucker Park, The Kingdom, Graffitti Wall of Fame, Harlem World and many others. As we arrive at many of historic locations, applicable video and audio clips will be presented on the overhead monitors - this will bring the heritage to life. After the tour will enjoy a delicious soul food meal followed by a visit to an actual basketball game at Rucker Park or the Kingdom. The atmosphere at Rucker Park and the Kingdom is amazing -you're going to love it.

Harlem Renaissance Night

Visit Harlem, and be a part of a one of a kind experience that will revisit the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's when the community was filled with cultural icons such as Duke Ellington, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes and James Weldon Johnson. The night includes the following:

 

 

Harlem Renaissance Multimedia Bus/Walking Tour
Night begins with a tour through historic Harlem presenting archival video and audio while you're there at various historic Harlem Renaissance sights. Imagine seeing video of Langston Hughes while traveling past last residence on west 127th Street.

Visit to Harlem Art Gallery
Art was a major contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and is one of the cornerstones of current cultural expression in the community. We will visit one of Harlem's premiere art galleries and have hors d'oeuvres and wine while experiencing a collection that's contributing to the current renaissance in Harlem.

Old School Harlem Renaissance Speakeasy Jam
Rent parties were popular during the 1920's and often featured some of the best talent in Harlem. Come with us and jam the night away as we recreate authentic 1920's Harlem rent party atmosphere with period music and poetry. Home cooked soul food will be served in same fashion it was during the renaissance.
