The Harlem Civil Rights Multimedia Day Trip revisits the tumultuous days of the 1950’s – 1970’s when disenfranchised people engaged in various forms of social protest in an effort to gain civil rights and curb racial discrimination.  Harlem overflows with cultural sights pertaining to the Civil Rights and Black Power periods 1950’s – present, and considering all that’s going on currently, we feel that studying and learning from the past can positively inform the present and future developments. Following is a description of event:

 

  • We start the day with a video presentation inside the Harlem Heritage Tourism and Cultural Center featuring local Civil Rights icons such as, but not limited to Malcolm X, Dr. Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Dr. Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker.

 

  • Video presentation is followed by a multimedia bus / walking tour visiting numerous historic sights in Harlem associated historic civil rights events and personalities, tour guide will be equipped with portable video and audio presenting authentic footage on the very spot where the history happen.  Imagine walking in the actual Harlem footsteps of Malcolm X while hearing one of his impactful speeches on location where speech happened in 1963.

 

  • After outdoor tour we will visit one of several historic institutions in Harlem that played a roll in organizing the people strategically, therefore creating opportunities that many enjoy today.  There are many institutions still vibrant in Harlem today that made huge contributions during the yesteryears of the Civil Rights Movement.

 

  • We will end the day eating the same delicious soul food enjoyed by those faithful freedom marchers of the south and the north in a Harlem restaurant emblematic of the period.
