Juneteenth Celebration in Harlem
The Juneteenth Committee of Masjid Malcolm Shabazz and The Martin Luther King Jr. Center New York Support Group are hosting the annual Juneteenth KingFest Celebration Parade and Street Fair Saturday, June 17, in Harlem starting at 11 a.m.
The parade will start at 116th Street between Lenox and Fifth avenues.
The Juneteenth holiday is Friday, June 19, and commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free. Slavery in the states in rebellion against the United States had been outlawed two and half years by the Emancipation Proclamation, but the proclamation had no real effect until the end of the Civil War in 1865. Parade sponsored by Masjid Malcolm Shabazz.
